我是美国人, 可是我正在学中文!
For the past few months, I’ve been taking a great course over at Harvard on Chinese. It’s been extremely challenging but a lot of fun.
The main reason I’m doing it is because I’m interested in Chinese culture and really want to understand a completely different way of communicating and viewing the world. I think language is one of the best ways to do that — in fact, the Chinese word for language (wén, 文) can also mean culture.
From a business perspective, it’s opened up a new world to me. I’m really interested in the Chinese online world. Chinese online games and social networks that are poorly understood in the West.
One thing I’ve heard is that the Chinese are often not interested in the same type of online entertainment as Westerners are — I want to understand that better. I would think the popularity of World of Warcraft disproves that; and recently, I’ve signed up for renren.com (人人网, the Chinese answer to Facebook), and I’ve found that many of their applications are just as sophisticated and polished as any in the West — sometimes even moreso (they have an application framework that’s similar to the Facebook Developer Platform).
This is going to be a fun world to explore. Post here if you have any specific recommendations on things to try!
